Healthy Communities
MultiCare has been a community-driven organization since the founding of our first hospital more than a century ago. We work alongside nonprofits, leaders, government agencies, businesses and other local partners to champion the needs of the people and regions we serve.
By providing financial support, addressing social drivers of health and ensuring lifesaving services are always within reach, we’re committed to helping our communities flourish.
In 2025, we worked closely with organizations and community members across the Pacific Northwest to advance health and well-being through a variety of efforts:
- MultiCare’s WIC team and the Mary Bridge Children’s summer meals program help families fight food insecurity.
- MultiCare’s Community Partnership Fund awards $800,000 in grants to nonprofits across Washington.
- A first-of-its-kind partnership between MultiCare and Pierce County emergency services providers expands access to lifesaving whole blood transfusions.
- MultiCare Deaconess Hospital teams up with Northwest Mothers Milk Bank to nourish vulnerable infants.
- MultiCare Capital Medical Center’s Story Walk promotes patient mobility while raising funds for community services.
- MultiCare partners with the American Heart Association and the Yakima Valley Farmworkers Clinic to tackle high blood pressure.
- The Dental Outreach program addresses critical gaps in dental care across Pierce County.
MultiCare programs fight food insecurity for children and families
In Washington state, one in seven children experience food insecurity, which can have lifelong negative impacts on mental and physical health. In 2025, we made strides in improving access to nutritious food and nutrition-related services for children and families through our federal and state-level partnerships.
MultiCare builds stronger, healthier futures with Community Partnership Fund
MultiCare is proud to partner with organizations that strengthen our communities by expanding access to care, support and essential resources.
Many of these organizations are recipients of the MultiCare Community Partnership Fund, which invests in nonprofit initiatives and programs that improve our communities. In 2025, we awarded $800,000 to 53 organizations across the Puget Sound, Inland Northwest and Yakima Valley regions.
Hear stories about some of our partners:
The Pierce County whole blood program provides care when every second counts
Trauma is the number-one cause of death for people under age 45, and up to 40 percent of these deaths are preventable when people receive rapid whole blood transfusions in the field. An innovative partnership between MultiCare, Central Pierce Fire & Rescue, the Tacoma Fire Department and Bloodworks Northwest enables paramedics to offer this vital intervention to trauma patients experiencing severe blood loss, improving their chances of survival and recovery. In 2025, 105 patients received lifesaving transfusions through this program.
Deaconess Hospital teams up with Northwest Mothers Milk Bank to nourish infants
For babies in the neonatal intensive care unit, breastmilk is “liquid gold.” But some mothers have trouble producing milk or may be unable to breastfeed at all. Donor milk can be a safe, nutrient-rich alternative for their infants. In 2025, MultiCare Deaconess and Mary Bridge Children’s hospitals began working with Northwest Mothers Milk Bank to open in-hospital drop sites for local mothers to donate breastmilk. Between March and December 2025, the Deaconess drop site received 7,357 ounces of donated breast milk for medically fragile and vulnerable babies.
Capital Medical Center’s Story Walk inspires mobility through art
When you’re healing from an illness or injury, too much rest can actually hinder your recovery. Story Walk is an employee-led initiative that invites patients to venture out of their rooms and move through hospital hallways adorned with photographs of lush Pacific Northwest landscapes. Generous donations through photo sponsorships have also raised funds for women’s health care and other programs. In 2025, Story Walk raised $53,000.
MultiCare partners with community organizations to tackle high blood pressure
When high blood pressure goes untreated, it can lead to serious health problems, including heart attacks and strokes. MultiCare, the American Heart Association and the Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic are on a mission to raise awareness about high blood pressure and empower some of the region’s most at-risk patients to support their heart health. In 2025, 60 home blood pressure monitors were given to patients through the partnership.
How MultiCare is closing the gap in oral health care
Untreated oral health problems can affect a person’s health, well-being and ability to go to work or attend school. MultiCare’s Dental Outreach Program helps close gaps in access by providing emergency and preventive dental care for children and adults in Pierce County. In 2025, the program received the Oral Health Hero Award from the Arcora Foundation for improving access to oral health care in Washington.
