The Tacoma Family Medicine Obstetrics Fellowship is a one-year experience designed for family medicine physicians seeking to include high-risk and surgical obstetrics with cesarean deliveries into their clinical practice. The program was established in 1989 and was the first of its kind in the United States. It is specifically designed to offer fellows the opportunity to build on their prior residency training and enhance both their cognitive and technical skills while offering a flexible curriculum tailored to individual learning needs.

Fellows completing this program develop advanced clinical capabilities, decision making skills, and the confidence needed to deliver high quality care in communities where access to specialized services may be limited.

Program highlights

  • An embedded group of OB/GYN physicians from Multicare OB/GYN Associates (MOGA) dedicated to training family physicians to provide both low and high-risk OB care in addition to cesarean deliveries.

  • A fellowship based prenatal clinic, Obstetrics Access Clinic (OBAC), has served as an OB safety net for our community since the inception of the program and is a training site for both fellows and family medicine residents.
  • Six fellows per academic year, ensuring reliable OB deck coverage while preserving protected time for electives and fostering strong camaraderie among those training together.
