Mission & History

Our mission

We are committed to teaching family medicine in order to provide full-spectrum compassionate care for communities in need.

Our vision

To be a national leader in family medicine education, a clinical model of a medical home, and a collaborator in Pierce County resident education.

Our history

Founded in 1978, TFM is a community-based Family Medicine residency program sponsored by MultiCare Health System and affiliated with the University of Washington providing care to the underserved of Tacoma. As the senior residency program in the area, we are proud to continue our unopposed learning environment which attracts diverse residents from all over the country.

Our graduates receive an “omnipotential” full-scope family medicine training to practice throughout the US and internationally. Reflecting our mission, most of our graduates include OB in their practices, including a third (1/3) who practice in health professional shortage areas (HPSAs) and a fourth (1/4) who practice rurally.

Our 12-member family physician faculty are committed to our mission of caring for an underserved patient population while providing excellent education for residents. All practice full-scope family medicine with OB and some with C/section privileges (check out the “People” tab to get to know our faculty).

The Tacoma-Pierce County area is one of the most ethnically diverse regions in Washington State. Our clinic cares for a 65-70% Medicaid/Medicare patient panel reflecting the diversity of our area and highlighting the impact of social determinants of health.
