Changing hearts and minds about substance use disorder

Changing hearts and minds about substance use disorder

Coping with substance use disorder (SUD) is a challenging journey, but recovery is possible. Countless individuals have persevered through their struggle with substance use, thanks in part to MultiCare’s SUD treatment programs, as well as support from friends and family. We reached out for both provider and patient perspectives that detail the ways in which individuals struggling with SUD may best be supported in their path to recovery.

The stories we’re sharing here are from individuals willing to open up about their journeys to recovery, in order to benefit others who may be seeking help as well. You’ll also hear from several MultiCare’s experts share their own perspectives on substance use disorder.

Our intent in sharing these stories with you is to de-stigmatize conversations about substance use disorder in a way that allows for more empathetic, hopeful care for those ready for treatment. The key to supporting those who are seeking help is to approach their care with compassion and to remember that SUD is a chronic disease, much like diabetes or high blood pressure. We want our providers to feel confident in their ability to support these patients with empathy, knowing that there truly is hope for recovery.
