MultiCare partners with Blue Zones and others to strengthen community health
At MultiCare, we believe everyone should have the opportunity to live a healthy, active, productive life. We are partnering with the organization Blue Zones, as well as Virginia Mason Franciscan Health and Pierce County leaders, to build a stronger, more equitable community — one where every Pierce County resident can live long and live well.
Your zip code matters
Research shows that a person’s neighborhood has a bigger influence on their health and well-being than genetics. Blue Zones tackles this phenomenon, known as the zip code effect, by focusing on sustainable changes to the life radius — the area close to home where you spend 90 percent of your time. Blue Zones has helped communities across the country:
- Reduce obesity, smoking and stress
- Improve employee and student productivity
- Boost economic vitality
Now Blue Zones is applying their research-driven, systematic approach to Pierce County, with MultiCare’s Center for Healthy Equity coordinating the endeavor.
Transforming Pierce County
In September 2021, Blue Zones held a virtual community summit to discuss the collaboration and possible outcomes. Currently, the organization is working with local leaders to:
- Assess Pierce County’s current state of well-being
- Identify opportunities for improvement
- Craft a detailed proposal with recommendations for change
