On a bluebird April day, Peter and Marty Braun, along with their son Nick, stepped onto the new MultiCare Mary Bridge Children\u2019s Hospital\u2019s state-of-the-art rooftop helipad.<\/p>\n

Emblazoned with a bright red \u201cH,\u201d this dedicated landing space ensures rapid transport for critically ill or injured babies, children and young adults from across Washington.<\/p>\n

While standing atop the highest point in Tacoma is a once-in-a-lifetime experience on its own, the moment carried deeper meaning \u2014 20 years earlier, Nick took his own lifesaving flight to Mary Bridge Children\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Taking flight<\/h2>\n

\"Helicopter,<\/p>\n

In 2006, a 14-year-old Nick sustained an injury that nearly cost him his life. Peter remembers being passed a note in a meeting that read, \u201cEmergency, call Marty.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the phone, she presented two options: Should they airlift Nick from Silverdale to Harborview, or to Mary Bridge Children\u2019s?<\/p>\n

For Peter, the answer was a no-brainer. He already knew the Tacoma children\u2019s hospital well, having ridden in the Mary Bridge Children\u2019s Courage Classic bike ride for years. Peter also fundraised for child abuse prevention and treatment programs there.<\/p>\n

When Nick arrived at Mary Bridge Children\u2019s, he was rushed into the first of two major surgeries led by Randall Holland, MD, FACS<\/a>. Dr. Holland removed his kidney and repaired his bisected bile duct \u2014 a complex intervention that ultimately kept the teen alive.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cHe was pretty touch and go,\u201d Peter recalls. \u201cThey didn\u2019t think he was going to make it. But trauma\u2019s weird because three days later, he\u2019s out of ICU in a bed, and two weeks later we\u2019re having our other sons\u2019 first birthday in Mary Bridge.\u201d<\/p>\n

The community at Mary Bridge Children\u2019s<\/h2>\n

The hallmark of Nick\u2019s Mary Bridge Children\u2019s journey was the people.<\/p>\n

Beginning with Dr. Holland, the Brauns noticed that whenever the surgeon entered the room, his focus went straight to their son. He looked at and spoke to Nick first, and only then turned to Peter and Marty. That simple act built trust and eased anxiety.<\/p>\n

Nick\u2019s final surgery was held at a Seattle hospital, and Dr. Holland surprised the family by showing up to lend his support. He even scrubbed in for the Roux-en-Y procedure, staying involved from start to finish.<\/p>\n

While some of his time at Mary Bridge Children\u2019s remains hazy, Nick will never forget the warmth of being surrounded by such a friendly, invested team.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s such a place that no matter what, they want you to feel comfortable,\u201d he shares. \u201cWhen you have the nurses and the doctors, they\u2019re also friendly. \u2026 It feels like they\u2019re invested specifically in you, and they want you to get better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both Marty and Peter felt that difference, too.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the way the community at Mary Bridge operates \u2014 I\u2019ve been in other children\u2019s hospitals, and it\u2019s different,\u201d Peter explains. \u201cMy sisters who were nurses noticed it. Everyone noticed it. It\u2019s the focus on the kid and the family. It\u2019s understanding this is a little patient, not a grown-up.\u201d<\/p>\n

A statement donation<\/h2>\n

Peter and Marty came away from their Mary Bridge Children\u2019s experience more committed to the cause than ever.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve given ever since, because we\u2019re so thankful for the work they did, and we saw everything they do for all these other patients,\u201d Marty shares.<\/p>\n

Over the years, the couple has contributed to Mary Bridge Children\u2019s Foundation<\/a> fundraising campaigns. Peter\u2019s also been a successful bidder in several Festival of Trees Gala auctions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, who can\u2019t raise money for sick kids, right?\u201d he says. \u201cI still remember \u2026 a little kid \u2026 with hair straight up. He rode around Mary Bridge in this little red wagon. And I would tell people, \u2018You know, you think things are kind of bad, and then you meet someone like that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

So, when the opportunity arose to invest in the campaign to build the new Mary Bridge Children\u2019s Hospital, Peter and Marty wanted to make a statement. In a full-circle gesture, their generous gift went toward the new helipad \u2014 ensuring that more kids like Nick can access immediate, lifesaving pediatric care in their hour of need.<\/p>\n

Nick himself is deeply inspired by his parents\u2019 example.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re kind of my guiding light in how I want to be with other people,\u201d he shares. \u201cI want to emulate that as much as possible because it\u2019s such a lofty goal that if I can get to that level of generosity and selflessness, then I\u2019ll know I’ll be in a good place.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think building and investing in the local community in places like a children\u2019s hospital grows exponentially what we can expect from our society,\u201d Nick continues.<\/p>\n

A legacy continued<\/h2>\n

Earlier this year, Nick decided to pursue a career in pediatric nursing, following in his nurse aunts\u2019 footsteps and furthering his parents\u2019 legacy of helping others.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe experience at Mary Bridge and pretty much my whole life \u2026 I\u2019ve always seen people helping people,\u201d he shares. \u201cAnd that\u2019s always something that I\u2019ve been passionate about. So, I started at TCC and then hoping to go to UW after that to get everything done for pediatrics and hopefully work at Mary Bridge.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reflecting on his hospital stay decades ago, Nick\u2019s most vivid memory is of a nurse who taught him how to properly swallow pills. In just a few years, he\u2019ll be the one offering that kind of guidance \u2014 performing medical assessments, easing fears and providing vital emotional support to young patients just like him.<\/p>\n

Marty and Peter couldn\u2019t be prouder.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a remarkable young man,\u201d Peter shares, emotion catching in his voice. \u201cHis experience would have ruined a lot of people, I think, or could have hurt him. But he\u2019s a good human being.\u201d<\/p>\n
