At a glance

  • Each year, Sound to Narrows relies on more than 200 volunteers
  • Volunteers help with packet pickup, cheer and water stations, finish-line greeters and more
  • Volunteers are still needed this year

Returning Sound to Narrows participants may see a familiar face this year when approaching water station #5 at the completion of the course.

For the past 10 years, Kathleen Rogacki, RN-BC, has volunteered at this stop. It’s a job that keeps her coming back year after year.

“In my opinion, this is the best location on the course,” Rogacki says. “I get to congratulate people, give them water, and thank them for running and walking.”

Each year, community members like Rogacki — who works at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital — step up to provide the support that keeps race day running smoothly. From packet pickup to course monitors, cheer and water stations to finish-line greeters, volunteers are a big part of what makes this hometown race a fixture of our community.

Sound to Narrows relies on more than 200 volunteers each year. In 2023, volunteers gave over 970 hours of their own time to make the event happen. These volunteer hours are a critical piece of the race’s success.

“Sound to Narrows is a vibrant gathering and healthy social event for our entire community,” says Hope Roberts, MultiCare grants, contracts and events manager. “The event relies on our volunteers more than anything. I encourage anyone who is curious about the event to join us this year. I promise it will put a smile on your face.”

Rogacki first got involved with the race because it sounded like fun. Now she can’t imagine letting a year go by without participating.

“Try it once and you will be hooked,” she says. “I will continue to participate even after I retire — that’s how fun it is.”

Sound to Narrows is a community event that offers something for everyone, Roberts says. The hilly course and 12K distance provide a challenge for elite athletes, while 5K walkers of all skills and abilities find a welcoming environment. Even babies get their introduction to Sound to Narrows with the 20-yard diaper dash.

“Sound to Narrows brings together people of all ages, abilities and socioeconomic statuses,” Rogacki says. “There are no barriers. All are welcome to participate; it is truly a community event.”

The finish-line festival brings together race participants, along with volunteers and spectators, in a celebration of everything that makes Tacoma unique.

“Whether you’re running up that hill, tabling a booth, cheering on a friend of family member, or giving your time as a volunteer, you are part of the action,” says Roberts.
