To support young athletes and promote fitness within our community, MultiCare Orthopedics & Sports Medicine has teamed up with Harbor Soccer Club of Gig Harbor.

Over the next two years, young players on Harbor Soccer Club’s 25 premier-level teams will wear jerseys that feature the logo of MultiCare Orthopedics & Sports Medicine.

In a show of appreciation, 10 players and their coaches visited MultiCare Gig Harbor Medical Park to present a framed jersey to MultiCare orthopedic surgeon Mason Platt, DO, and primary care sports medicine provider Joshua Purses, DO.

After the presentation and a group photo, Dr. Platt and Dr. Purses kicked a ball around with the players outside the office.

Dr. Platt, who played soccer in college, specializes in sports medicine, orthopedics and orthopedic surgery. Dr. Purses, who ran track and cross country in college, is the team physician for Pacific Lutheran University and an assistant team physician for the Tacoma Rainiers. He specializes in sports medicine, pediatrics, orthopedics and internal medicine.

“I believe that athletics in childhood is the gateway to health for a lifetime,” Dr. Purses said. “Some of the most important life lessons I have learned have come through athletics.”

About 1,500 boys and girls from around the South Sound and Kitsap Peninsula play on Harbor Soccer Club teams of all ages and ability levels. The club includes about 25 premier teams with a total of 375 premier-level players.

In the future, Dr. Platt and Dr. Purses hope to offer training in injury prevention, concussion management and nutrition for Harbor Soccer Club players and coaches.
