The holiday season is upon us and we all know how much of a challenge this can pose for our weight management goals. However, despite the challenge, there are several ways to help navigate the holidays while remaining on track with your personal goals. Read below for just a few quick tips for making it through the holidays.

  • Assess your options. Think ahead. Plan to make healthier versions of your holiday favorites. When possible, distance yourself from the kitchen and/or food table to reduce risk of impulse eating.
  • Avoid going hungry. Have you ever gone grocery shopping hungry? Then you probably know that it can be a challenge to stick to your game plan and this is no different. Don’t forget to keep up your small frequent meals throughout the day and try having a protein-rich meal and/or snack prior to the holiday meal to help keep your appetite in control.
  • Beverages. Save your calories for your foods! Many holiday drinks are high in added sugars (ie: apple cider) or rich in fat (ie: eggnog) and can really add up fast. Alcohol is no exception as it also contains many sneaky calories! Stick to calorie-free beverages to stay on top of your hydration needs.
  • Stick to your priorities. Contrary to popular belief, eating around the holidays can actually be rather healthy. As always, identify your lean proteins, such as turkey breast or ham and focus on pairing these foods with non-starchy vegetables and fruit, if available. If you still have room, allow yourself a bite or two of a side dish that may not be as high of a priority, such as a starchy vegetable.
  • The “Three Bite” Rule. When approaching those decadent dessert items (and other calorie-rich foods), try this approach:
    • Take one bite to introduce the food.
    • Take a second bite to really savor the taste.
    • Take a third bite to say goodbye.
