Interventional Radiology

Interventional radiology is a medical specialty that pairs imaging techniques such as X-rays, CT scans and MRIs with minimally invasive procedures. For example, an interventional radiologist may use images to guide the insertion of small catheters or other specialized tools through blood vessels or pathways in the body.

Interventional radiology procedures allow physicians to diagnose and treat certain health conditions — such as vascular diseases and some types of cancer — without performing major surgery.

Common interventional radiology procedures include:

  • Angiography. This procedure identifies blockages or narrowing of blood vessels. Blockages can often be treated through other interventional radiology procedures, such as angioplasty.
  • Embolization. Used to stop heavy bleeding or hemorrhaging, embolization is achieved by inserting a substance through a catheter into a blood vessel.
  • Stent placement. A small coil — called a stent — is inserted inside a blood vessel and then expanded to open a blockage.
  • Needle biopsy. Imaging technology guides the insertion of a small needle to obtain a sample of tissue or fluids from muscles, bones or organs for laboratory analysis. Needle biopsies can help diagnose cancer or infections.

What to expect

While each interventional radiology procedure is different, most require a short hospital stay. The specific length of time will depend on whether sedation or anesthesia is involved and the nature of the procedure.

You will not be able to drive yourself home after the procedure, so please make arrangements in advance for transportation. Friends or family members are welcome in our designated waiting rooms while the procedure takes place.
