Cancer research and clinical trials at MultiCare

MultiCare has been participating in cancer research since 1983. Our record of exceptional clinical trial performance has helped us become a trusted partner in national clinical trials, which provide promising new treatments.

Highlights of our program include:

Experience. For 40 years, MultiCare has conducted clinical trials testing new diagnostics, treatments and prevention strategies for a wide variety of cancers. We participate in pharmaceutical research for all stages of cancer, offering research opportunities across the state of Washington.

Access to clinical trials at multiple phases. Clinical trials take place in four phases, with each answering different research questions. We offer access to clinical trials in a variety of phases. MultiCare frequently has early-phase trials available, which means you may be among the first group of patients in the country to receive a new cancer treatment.

Coordination. When you participate in a clinical trial, you continue receiving care from the same team of MultiCare cancer experts you already know and trust. We manage all the details, such as scheduling additional tests you may need for the trial.

How to participate in a clinical trial

At MultiCare, all patients with a cancer diagnosis are considered for clinical trials. Each clinical trial has a unique set of eligibility requirements that must be met, such as having a particular diagnosis or trying a specific treatment first. We will recommend a clinical trial if our team determines the benefits will likely outweigh any risks associated with the investigative treatment.

If you are eligible for a trial, we will explain the trial and why we think it may be an option as part of your clinical care treatment plan. The decision of whether to participate is yours.

Our cancer research team includes doctors, nurses, pharmacists and research coordinators. Coordinators stay in close contact with you throughout your clinical trial experience. They offer an added layer of safety by making sure you receive all the treatments that are part of the trial and catching early signs of complications.

As a result of our work in research, patients of MultiCare Health System often have early access to promising medications and devices, radiation therapies, and surgical techniques that offer types of care that otherwise would not be available.
