When you’re an advanced practice provider (physician assistant or advanced registered nurse practitioner), working independently in a specialized field such as oncology can be challenging. There are many facets of care to learn and the rapid pace of innovations in the field can make it hard to keep up.
MultiCare Regional Cancer Center is easing this burden and investing in the future of the oncology workforce with the Advanced Practice Provider Oncology Residency.
Our Advanced Practitioner Provider Oncology Residency Program
MultiCare is one of only a few cancer centers in the country offering postgraduate oncology training for physician assistants and advanced registered nurse practitioners (ARNPs). Our program provides participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to become expert cancer care providers.
Advanced practice provider (APP) oncology residents are paid, full-time employees of MultiCare. We offer an immersive, six-month learning experience in which:
- Recent graduates gain valuable real-world experience in a supportive learning environment.
- Practicing APPs have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge under the mentorship of experienced oncology clinicians.
Oncology residency clinical training for physician assistants and ARNPs
Physician assistants and ARNPs may receive up to six months of training in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Practicing oncology APPs and other oncology providers deliver the training. Trainees also participate in regular hospital rounds under the supervision of the attending physician.
Training gives APPs an understanding of the entire cancer patient journey through a set of rotations. This experience mirrors what physicians learn as they complete medical oncology fellowship training.
Residents rotate through all services that touch cancer patients, including:
- Nutrition services
- Oncology pathology
- Oncology pharmacy
- Palliative care
- Physical therapy
- Radiation oncology
- Surgical oncology
Additional oncology residency training objectives
The residency curriculum also includes:
- Tumor board meetings: Trainees regularly attend tumor board meetings and start presenting patients cases after a few months of training.
- Quality improvement project: All participants develop a quality improvement project and present a poster at MultiCare Institute for Research & Innovation’s Research Day. This one-day event showcases investigator-initiated research.
- Mentorship: Residents receive ongoing feedback through weekly meetings with a program preceptor.
- Online training: Completing the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) online advanced practitioner training programs is part of the residency. These programs offer CME credit. Registration fees are covered by MultiCare.
