How to apply for the MIS Fellowship

The Fellowship Council logoMultiCare Health System offers an accredited clinical fellowship through The Fellowship Council. The Fellowship Council is an association of program directors and specialty societies charged with oversight of fellowship training programs in to uphold uniformly high standards and produce well trained surgeons. This Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship is focused on minimally invasive, robotic, colorectal, foregut and bariatric surgery.

Applicants must have an interest in developing advanced skills in minimally invasive, robotic and flexible endoscopy. The program will focus on developing proficiency in operative skills in the area of advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery, and to develop research skills in the area of upper and lower GI surgery.

The fellow’s training experience will be primarily in upper/lower GI and bariatric surgery procedures such as paraoesophageal hernia repair and fundoplication, revisional foregut surgery, primary bariatric (gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy) and revisional procedures, colectomies and complex colorectal cases, diagnostic and therapeutic flexible endoscopy.

The fellow will also be taught basic and advanced robotic surgical skills and will graduate as a certified robotic surgeon.

The fellow will be involved in clinical and quality outcome research and will receive mentoring on manuscript preparation, and research presentation.  The fellow will be required to submit at least one abstract for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Eligibility requirements

  • Applicants to the Advanced GI Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship program must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents with a Green Card.
  • Applicants must have passed the USMLE/COMPLEX Step 1, 2, and 3 exams.
  • Fellows must be eligible for and receive an unrestricted medical license prior to the intended start date. The fellow will be considered as faculty-fellow and need to be eligible for credentialing.

Interested applicants must apply through The Fellowship Council. The 2025-2026 fellowship year application process for surgical fellowships, Advanced GI Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) is now open. Applicants have until January 15, 2024 to confirm their applications to programs. Letters of recommendation must also be received by January 15, 2024.
