Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) Fellowship is accredited through the Fellowship Council.
The goal of the Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) Fellowship is to provide fellows with the training and education necessary to develop and enhance techniques and clinical skills in the preoperative and postoperative management of advanced foregut, colorectal, bariatric and solid organ surgery, with a major emphasis on minimally invasive techniques and emerging technology. The fellowship is accredited by The Fellowship Council.
The MIS Fellowship is divided into three principle components for developing competency: clinical, didactic and scholarly activity. Each are considered equally important and are required elements of the fellowship.
Clinical activity represents the majority of the fellowship. The purpose of this component is to gain knowledge, skills and experience leading to advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery. Evaluation of the competency of the fellow will be reviewed by the core faculty and an individual educational plan will be implemented and revised as appropriate through the duration of training. Clinical activity may also be reviewed and evaluated by the Peer Review Committee and the Graduate Medical Education Committee of the medical staff.
The fellow will also participate in organized didactic sessions designed to increase their knowledge in the field. This will include assigned reading, small group reviews of pertinent topics and formal presentations. The fellow will be expected to both participate in and delivery on a variety of surgical subjects.
Scholarly activity may include original research, quality improvement projects, journal club, involvement in providing continuing medical education, poster presentations and other related methods for advancing the scientific knowledge of advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques. It is expected that the fellow will present to colleagues in public forums as well as submit work for peer review and publication.
The one-year fellowship begins August 1 and ends July 31. One non-ACGME-accredited fellowship position is available each year.
