Addiction Medicine Fellowship

What is the program?

The MultiCare Addiction Medicine Fellowship offers a comprehensive one-year training opportunity to Family Physicians and Obstetricians passionate about providing high-quality integrated care to people with substance abuse and dependence. In addition to Addiction Medicine training, this fellowship provides experience and skill-development working as junior faculty within a thriving community-based residency program.

Our program provides an in-depth experience, with an emphasis on the care of pregnant women with addiction, along with elective experiences selected by each fellowship participant to meet his or her training needs. Our training and teaching are closely integrated with our Family Medicine residency. This program utilizes a longitudinal schedule to allow fellows to gain experience at several training sites over the course of the year.

What can be expected?

Fellows will develop robust outpatient Addiction Medicine skills in a continuity practice as well as a specialized addiction/obstetrics practice based out of East Pierce Family Medicine, an innovative regional methadone maintenance program, and multiple community Addiction Medicine practices.

Fellows will gain experience with:

• Detoxification and inpatient treatment of pregnant women at a Seattle-area hospital site and will participate in the development of a similar inpatient program at MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, WA.
• Intensive outpatient treatment
• Assessment and placement while working with trained chemical dependency counselors at Good Samaritan Behavioral Health.

Fellows will rotate through specialty pain management programs, high-risk pregnancy care sites, and other specialty elective sites to provide exposure to a variety of recovery models. Fellows will supervise residents and provide continuity clinic care at East Pierce Family Medicine Residency. They will also have the opportunity to attend inpatient medicine, pediatric, and obstetric patients (as appropriate for their specialty training) with the residency team in a supported manner in order to build faculty skills and experience. Fellows will lead monthly case conference sessions with community Addiction Medicine providers and will participate in monthly journal clubs along with faculty and community providers.
