MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup has been helping people with a variety of rehabilitation challenges since 1954. Today, our physicians, nurses, and therapists are among the most experienced and respected in the Pacific Northwest. We have established a reputation for consistent, excellent rehabilitation services to adolescents and adults with many types of problems.
We help determine the most appropriate setting and intensity of the required rehabilitation services in light of the client’s clinical needs, goals, and situation. Clients who are treated as inpatients often require a high level of physician intervention, 24-hour rehab nursing care, and a combination of therapies.
Most clients are referred while they are still in the hospital recovering from a serious event or injury, or after experiencing a significant change in their ability to function independently. However, some of our clients are referred to us from skilled nursing facilities as well as community based physicians at the time when the client is able to tolerate a more intensive rehabilitation program.
Once admitted, our inpatients are under the supervision of a staff physiatrist, a physician who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Every team member shares the goals of increasing the patient’s independence, restoring function when possible, and preventing complications.
We start planning with patients for their discharge as soon as they are admitted. We ask patients and their families about their home situations and responsibilities during our initial assessments of therapy needs. When appropriate, we also ask about work and/or school situations. We continue to present questions during the patient’s stay with us. These help us work with each person to develop their successful discharge plan.
After being discharged, many people still have rehabilitation challenges and require additional services. We can provide these services in the person’s home or primary residence, or on an outpatient basis at one of our clinics.

We provide rehabilitation care to individuals ages 14 and older for several different conditions. The primary conditions we treat are:
- Stroke
- Spinal cord injury
- Brain injury
- Neurological conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s, ALS, Cerebral Palsy
- Major multiple trauma injuries
- Medically complex conditions

Provisions of services

Inpatient rehabilitation is provided in MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital. It is a 38-bed unit that is located on Level A of the Meadow Pavilion. Our unit accommodates both private and semi-private rooms dependent on the needs of the patient/family receiving care.
Every patient receives specialized rehabilitation nursing care 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Therapies are provided from 7am to 5pm Each patient will receive a daily schedule that consists of three hours of therapy daily, Sunday through Saturday. All services within the adjoining acute hospital are available to the inpatient rehab program 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
Your physiatrist will request consultation from other physicians if necessary to ensure that your medical condition remains stable during recovery. These services are billed separately to your insurance company.
Every patient receives care from a team of clinicians. Depending on the individual’s needs your team will consist of the following professionals:
- Care coordinator/social worker: Your care coordinator and social worker will help during your inpatient stay and will assist you with discharge planning and financial arrangements as well as provide regular updates on your condition to your insurer and family physician.
- Therapist(s) work with you on practical, lifestyle, physical and communication skills and functionality.
- The occupational therapist (OT) works with you on practical skills such as dressing, cooking and grooming for daily living. Occupational therapists teach individuals how to adapt their home, school or work environment to accomplish daily tasks.
- Physical therapists (PT) evaluate your muscles and how well you bend and move; test your balance and work on your strength, walking, endurance and flexibility.
- A speech pathologist is concerned about anything that makes it difficult for you to communicate. Your speech therapist will evaluate and work with you on your speech and swallowing, as well as your memory and other thinking skills including judgment, problem solving, reasoning and attention span.
- Therapeutic recreation specialist (TR) works with you on skills you need to reintegrate back into the community. Your TR will also work with you on practical skills to return to the recreation and leisure pursuits that are important to you.
- Psychologist: The psychology staff will help you and your family deal with the emotional and interpersonal adjustments to your medical condition
- Other team members will consist of respiratory therapy, nutritionist, chaplain and medical consultation as needed.

MultiCare Home Health provides nursing and rehabilitation team members who are committed to helping children and adults resolve immediate medical and therapy concerns.
Our clients include people with rehabilitation challenges resulting from stroke, trauma, cancer, skin or orthopedic problems, and post-surgical issues, as well as those who need clinical interventions and/or monitoring for other reasons.
Additionally, the renowned MultiCare Good Samaritan Children’s Therapy Unit offers programs and support services to children with long-term disabilities. Our senior service programs serve older adults. We also sponsor several types of independent-living, leisure-based activities, classes, and support groups for patients, caregivers, their families and the general public.
