Urogynecology

In the United States, approximately one out of four women suffers from a pelvic floor disorder, such as urinary incontinence or loss of bowel control. These disorders happen when the muscles, connective tissue and ligaments that support internal organs — like the bladder, rectum and vagina — become weakened or are injured.

Pelvic floor disorders can cause discomfort and make it difficult to participate in activities you enjoy. Our urogynecology team specializes in treating these disorders, improving your quality of life and supporting your long-term pelvic health.

What we treat

There are many factors that can lead to pelvic floor disorders, including aging, loss of muscle tone, menopause, multiple vaginal deliveries, obesity, family history and certain medical conditions such as diabetes.

Some of the pelvic floor disorders we treat include:

  • Urinary incontinence (loss of bladder control)
  • Overactive bladder (urinary urgency and frequency)
  • Fecal incontinence (loss of bowel control)
  • Pelvic organ prolapse (bladder, rectum or uterus dropping into vaginal area)
  • Fistulas (abnormal connections between the rectum or bladder and vagina)
  • Trauma from childbirth
  • Recurrent bladder infections
  • Difficulty emptying the bladder or bowels
  • Dyspareunia (painful intercourse)

While women may be more likely to experience pelvic floor disorders, they can affect people of any gender. Some people are reluctant to seek medical treatment for these issues, often because they feel embarrassed or assume they are a natural consequence of aging or childbirth. However, most pelvic floor disorders can be effectively treated.
